Software
You could create software programs and sell those. If you don't know how
to create your own software, you could hire a freelancer to create programs
for you.
These resources may help:
If you don't want to create your own software another idea is to distribute
(for example, on CD-ROMs) copies of software which you have permission to
distribute.
While you can not simply copy most software packages
(copyright does not allow it), there are software packages which
you can get permission to distribute, for example:
- If you know of a niche software package distributed by a small company, you may be able to negotiate a deal with the authors, allowing you to sell copies of their software. (It would probably be a good idea to get the agreement in writing!)
- Authors who license their software under the
GNU General Public License ("GPL")
[and other similar
Open Source Licenses - check the license's Terms and Conditions], have granted you (and others) permission to distribute their software,
provided you comply with the
GPL's Terms and Conditions.
One example (of many) of software that is available under the
GPL, is the
Linux operating system.
Although, please note that Linux packages that you can buy,
often include other software under
proprietary licenses
on the same media,
which you can not lawfully redistribute - so you will need
to check the license terms for all the items that you wish to distribute
to make sure it is allowed.
While the GPL-licensed software can often be downloaded free from the
Internet, it is possible to build a business based on distributing such
software - for example, customers may prefer to buy from you if you
provide an easy-to-use CD-ROM, with clear instructions,
installation procedures, etc.
An example of a company which has built their business around Open Source is
RedHat, Inc. who are a public company listed on the US NASDAQ stock exchange.
On a smaller scale, if you were to read Jim Wilson's eBay Secrets, you'd discover that Jim has made money by selling software on eBay.
Note:
eBay has rules on the types of digital products you may sell
there, and these rules may vary from time to time. For current
information please review
eBay's policies on downloadable media.
